The Campilhas Dam is located in the town of Campilhas, part of the municipality of Santiago do Cacém, in the district of Setúbal. Situated on the Campilhas stream, this hydraulic structure blends into the typical Alentejo landscape, characterized by vast horizons and an atmosphere of tranquility.
Its position offers a wide perspective of the surrounding environment, proving to be a point of interest in the region.
The construction of the Campilhas Dam was planned in 1941, and it became operational in 1954. It is an embankment dam, meaning it was built primarily with earth and rock, giving it a robust presence in the landscape.
With a height of approximately 35 meters above its foundation and a crest length of 711 meters, the dam demonstrates the scale of engineering applied to its purpose, creating a remarkable barrier to water.
The Campilhas reservoir, which spans an area of 3.33 square kilometers, is the vast body of water retained by the dam. This reservoir plays a fundamental role for the region, being an essential source for supply and, especially, for irrigating the surrounding agricultural fields.
Its existence is crucial for local agriculture, supporting rural life and development. Given its importance, the reservoir is a vital resource that sometimes faces challenges imposed by periods of drought, highlighting the community's dependence on this reservoir.
The Campilhas Dam harmoniously blends into the Alentejo scenery, where the blue of the water meets the earthy tones. The presence of this large body of water creates a distinct environment, inviting moments of calm and nature observation.
It is a place where the scale of human intervention merges with the serenity of nature, providing a space to enjoy the quietness and the vastness of the Alentejo horizon.
