Located in the village of Torrão, in the municipality of Alcácer do Sal, in the district of Setúbal, this church is a central point of the local community.
Since 1933, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção has been considered a Property of Public Interest (IIP), standing out for its historical and architectural relevance.
The church continues to be the place of celebration of masses and other religious ceremonies, serving the parish of Torrão, which is part of the Archdiocese of Évora.
The building presents a simple and robust architecture, with emphasis on the chancel and the central nave, which has columns and vaults. The main altar has been remodeled over the years, and the church has been the target of several interventions, including the removal of original elements, such as the main altarpiece, which was taken to the Exhibition of the Portuguese World in the 40s.
The church has a long history, with references as early as the 18th century, when the prior of the parish described the similarity of its structure to the Church of São Nicolau in Lisbon, which had been damaged by the 1755 earthquake.
Although it has lost some decorative elements, such as the 17th-century tiles that were transferred to another church, the church continues to be an important place of devotion and historical heritage in the region.
