The construction of the chapel was authorized in 1729 by King João V, in response to the request of the brotherhood of Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso (Our Lady of Good Success). The construction replaced an earlier, smaller chapel that had existed since the reign of King Manuel.
Located in Torrão, in a rural and isolated area, the chapel is surrounded by agricultural fields, with a peaceful environment, ideal for those who appreciate the serenity of the countryside.
The chapel follows the Portuguese Baroque style, characterized by its sobriety and simplicity. The temple has a galilee (a kind of porch) with double arches, Tuscan pilasters and a terrace with balustrade. The facade is marked by a central portal and two side windows, with a window for the choir on the upper floor.
The tower, with a spherical dome and pinnacles, stands out in the construction. It is one of the most visible features of the chapel, being visible from the surrounding area.
The interior consists of a single nave with a gilded altarpiece. Highlights include the murals that adorn the vault and walls, as well as the gilded carving of the triumphal arch. The pulpit, with gilded and painted carving, is also a point of interest inside the chapel.
Next to the chapel is the Pilgrims' House, where pilgrims who visited the place could stay. The house is classified as a Property of Public Interest, together with the chapel.
The Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso was classified as a Monument of Public Interest in 2012, with a Special Protection Zone, thus preserving its historical and cultural value.
The chapel can be visited from the EN 383 road, heading towards Torrão. It is located about 700 meters from the center of the town.
The chapel is an excellent example of 18th-century religious architecture and reflects the simple and effective Baroque style, with Mannerist elements still visible.
