The Ribeira dos Moinhos Lagoon is located in the municipality of Sines, in the village of Ribeira de Moinhos. This place is situated within the Alentejo coastal landscape, approximately two kilometers north of Sines city. It represents the estuary of the eponymous stream, where inland waters meet the ocean, forming a distinct and naturally serene transitional environment.
This small coastal lagoon constitutes a wetland of great ecological value, functioning as a refuge for wildlife. Its dense emergent vegetation, with its vast reed beds, offers an ideal habitat for a diversity of birds, both aquatic and terrestrial. It is a point of interest for those who appreciate nature observation in its purest state, with the presence of various bird species throughout the year. Visitors can observe birds resting, feeding, or in flight, not only in the lagoon area but also in the adjacent dunes and beach, which complement this ecosystem.
The Ribeira dos Moinhos Lagoon provides an environment of tranquility and a direct connection with the local ecosystem. It is common to be surprised by the variety of species that shelter here, many of them more easily perceived by their song than by their visual presence, due to the dense vegetation that protects them.
The Ribeira dos Moinhos Lagoon can be explored from different angles, with routes available along both the north bank and the south bank. Each of these sides offers distinct observation points that allow for a comprehensive view of the lagoon and its natural surroundings.
On the north bank, some higher points provide a broader panorama, ideal for contemplating the lagoon's extent and its connection to the beach. Along the south bank, access is via a dirt path that facilitates approaching the water. It is possible to continue the route along the stream until reaching the beach, allowing the observation perspective to vary from the interior of the lagoon to the coastal scenery, taking advantage of the natural light that enhances the landscape.
