When spotting suspicious vessels, it fired warning shots (salvos) to alert the population and call the defenders to action.
Built in the 17th century, following a project by architect Alexandre Massai, at a time when several coastal fortresses were erected in Portugal.
It maintained a military garrison until 1844.
Considered a Property of Public Interest since September 12, 1978.
Maritime fort in the Mannerist style, with a rectangular plan, casemate, and battery. Currently, it no longer has the old gun emplacements on the parapet.
It represents a testimony of the Portuguese coastal defense in past centuries and is part of the historical heritage of Sines.
