Setúbal Cathedral / Church of Santa Maria da Graça

Category: Religious Architecture > Church

District: Setúbal > Setúbal > Setúbal

Location

The Setúbal Cathedral, also known as the Church of Santa Maria da Graça, is situated in the central area of the city, in the Salgado neighbourhood. This historic site marked the medieval development of Setúbal, having been the most relevant religious and, in past times, political-administrative centre of the city. Its central location integrates visitors into an area of notable identity and historical legacy of Setúbal.

Historical and Architectural Trajectory

The history of the Setúbal Cathedral began in the 13th century, at which time it was built in an early Romanesque-Gothic style. However, the structure observed today is largely the result of an extensive reconstruction carried out in the second half of the 16th century, under the guidance of architect António Rodrigues. This work gave it the Mannerist character that defines it today. It was only in 1975 that this church was elevated to the status of Cathedral, becoming the main temple of the diocese of Setúbal.

The Façade and the Bell Tower

As one approaches the Cathedral, its imposing façade stands out, characterized by the sobriety and grandeur of the Mannerist style. On the left side, the bell tower rises robustly, giving a distinctive presence to the architectural ensemble. The main portal, of Mannerist design, introduces the visitor to the interior of the temple, where the simple elegance and monumentality characteristic of its reconstruction period are revealed.

The Interior and its Highlights

Upon passing through the portal, the visitor accesses a space that reveals several significant artistic elements. Inside, the Tuscan order columns supporting the naves are decorated with 19th-century frescoes, which contribute to the atmosphere of the place. The ceiling, dating from the second half of the 18th century, completes the ambiance. Several altarpieces in gilded wood carvings can be observed, demonstrating the skill of the 17th and 18th centuries. The Main Chapel features a "National Style" gilded wood carving by master José Rodrigues Ramalho, completed at the end of the 17th century. The side walls are covered with blue and white tile panels from the 18th century, depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary.
