Bonfim Park, one of Setúbal's most iconic green spaces, is harmoniously integrated into the city's urban fabric, specifically in the Bairro Salgado area. Located in Setúbal, at the heart of the municipality bearing the same name, this park functions as a true "green lung," offering a tranquil refuge in the midst of the bustling city life.

Its strategic position allows for easy access, inviting a relaxing break or a leisurely stroll amidst nature, without having to stray too far from the urban center.

A Historical Legacy

The history of Bonfim Park dates back to the 16th century, making it the oldest formal green space in the municipality of Setúbal. Its origin is attributed to D. Manuel I, who acquired the old Herdade Barbuda estate and had a pleasant garden planted there. Over the centuries, the site underwent significant works and expansions, culminating in the park we know today, whose current design, with its modernist conception, is largely attributed to landscape architect António Viana Barreto, in the 1950s.

This historical journey has given the park a unique identity, preserving its original purpose of offering a corner for leisure and contemplation, always adapted to the community's needs.

Nature and Scenic Environment

With an area exceeding four hectares, Bonfim Park dazzles with its botanical and landscape richness. The park hosts a remarkable diversity of tree species, some of which are considered unique in the municipality, such as the Araucaria bidwilli, the Sequoia angustifolia, and a group of Grevillea robusta. Also noteworthy is an imposing Black Maple (Acer negundo), a centenary tree classified by the ICNF.

In the center of the park, a lake invites relaxation, being home to various birds that find refuge there. A small water channel, fed by a circular tank, winds through the park, producing a gentle murmur that contributes to the serene and tranquil atmosphere.

Cultural and Recreational Elements

In addition to its natural beauty, Bonfim Park is also a space for cultural enrichment and leisure. Scattered throughout the green area are various points of interest, such as the stone-carved City Coat of Arms, the charismatic Pasmadinhos de Setúbal, and an interesting Sundial. One can also appreciate the bronze bust of the poet António Maria Eusébio, known as "Calafate," and a sculpture alluding to the "Centenary of the Scouting Movement."

The park also offers areas for children's entertainment, with a playground, and features an amphitheater that occasionally hosts shows, making it a dynamic and versatile place for all ages.
