The Convent of Brancanes was founded in 1682 by Friar António das Chagas to train Franciscan missionaries, inspired by the work of the missionaries of the Convent of Varatojo.
The convent's name originates from D. Branca Anes, the former owner of the land where it was built.
Since 2010, the Convent of Brancanes has been considered a Property of Municipal Interest.
- After the 1755 earthquake, it served as the headquarters of the Setúbal City Council.
- During the French Invasions, it was transformed into a military hospital.
- On June 11, 1761, Frei Alexandre da Sagrada Família began his religious life there.
It had a library with rare books that were destroyed by a fire caused in 1910 during popular unrest.
- It served as a military barracks and later as a prison establishment between 1998 and 2007.
- Currently deactivated, it was sold to a private entity and has been for sale since 2019.
The convent is located in the parish of Nossa Senhora da Anunciada, in Setúbal, in an area of easy access and of great historical interest for visitors.
