The Multisensory Garden of Energies is located in the Santos Nicolau area, in Setúbal. This location offers a privileged view over the waters of the Sado River and the imposing landscape of the Arrábida Mountains. Situated in a tranquil part of the city, it invites a serene stroll, allowing visitors to enjoy the surrounding natural environment and its proximity to Setúbal's riverside.
Conceived as a space for experimentation and learning, this garden offers an interpretive journey through the universe of renewable energies. Along the route, visitors encounter various thematic stations, each dedicated to a form of energy, such as solar, wind, hydro, ocean, geothermal, or biomass. Through equipment designed for direct interaction, it is possible to explore and understand the basic principles of using these energy sources, in an approach that combines rigor with clarity of content.
The garden was designed to stimulate the senses, providing an immersive experience. Elements such as aromatic plants, various textures, sound effects created by water and wind, and visual contrasts invite a sensory awakening. Rest and leisure areas complement the route, offering moments for contemplation and relaxation in contact with nature.
The Multisensory Garden of Energies distinguishes itself by its strong vocation for inclusion, having been designed to be fully accessible to everyone. The paths were designed to ensure the circulation of people with reduced mobility, and the information stations have features that facilitate their use by visitors with visual or hearing impairments.
The composite deck flooring in the station areas, with a distinct texture from the pedestrian paths, allows, for example, visually impaired individuals to identify the different zones. This focus on accessibility transforms the garden into a valuable resource for promoting well-being and rehabilitation, allowing everyone to enjoy the sensations and tranquility that the environment provides, often difficult to find in other contexts.
This green space is also a practical example of sustainability. The Multisensory Garden of Energies is energetically self-sufficient, with a small generating plant that combines photovoltaic and wind energy, installed on-site. This particularity allows all the energy required for the garden's operation to be produced on-site, resulting in a zero carbon balance.
This approach reflects a commitment to the preservation of natural resources and the reduction of environmental impact, aligning with the latest European strategies for nearly zero-energy buildings. Thus, the garden serves not only as a place for leisure and learning but also as a model of ecological responsibility, practically demonstrating the benefits of renewable energies and sustainable management.
