The Church of São Sebastião stands in the São Domingos area, an urban zone in the eastern part of the city of Setúbal. It is located in Largo de São Domingos, a local landmark that integrates this emblematic building into the urban fabric of Setúbal.
The history of the current Church of São Sebastião dates back to the second half of the 16th century, with its construction occurring between the years 1564 and 1566. This temple was built under the patronage of D. Sebastião, hence its name, and its design is attributed to the royal architect Afonso Álvares. Initially part of the old Convent of São Domingos, of the Dominican Order, the church became the seat of the Parish of São Sebastião in 1835, one of the oldest in the city, established in 1553. Although it suffered significant damage from the 1755 earthquake, its original structure remained intact. The importance of this monument was officially recognized in 1996, when it was classified as a Property of Public Interest.
The Church of São Sebastião features a Mannerist architectural style, characterized by its austerity and large proportions, an approach common in the second half of the 16th century that reflects Afonso Álvares' training as a military engineer. Externally, the imposing facade stands out, composed of three equally tall sections, marked by Tuscan pilasters and topped by a triangular pediment. The main portal and the windows of the upper register were altered after the 1755 earthquake.
Inside, the temple features a single nave with intercommunicating side chapels. The original barrel vault ceiling was replaced by a wooden ceiling following the earthquake. The chancel, flanked by two chapels, was possibly enlarged during that period and houses a remarkable Polychrome Pombaline carved altarpiece, with paintings dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary. The remaining carved altars, which adorn the side chapels, are also of Pombaline type and are noteworthy for their polychromy. The interior space, ample and well-lit by several windows, invites careful observation of the artistic details that bear witness to centuries of history.
