Centenary Wood is located in the city of Setúbal, within the residential area of Vale de Cobro. It is bordered by urban arteries such as Avenida das Descobertas, Rua Cristóvão Colombo, and Rua Engenheiro Mamede Fialho, making it an accessible landmark within the urban fabric.
This green space was designed to integrate harmoniously into the surrounding residential environment, transforming a previously uncharacterized area into an inviting place for the community and visitors, offering a natural respite in the city.
With an area of approximately 4300 square meters, Centenary Wood is a living tribute to the history of Portugal. Its creation resulted from a national project within the scope of the Centenary of the Republic Commemorations, aiming to perpetuate the memory of the establishment of this regime on October 5, 1910.
The wood is composed of a hundred native tree species, complemented by a vast array of shrubs and over three thousand square meters of lawns. This natural environment provides a refuge and highlights the importance of the "cult of the tree" in the human landscape, a vision valued since the early days of the Republic.
Beyond its natural value, Centenary Wood serves as a place of memory and civic reflection. Along its paths, informative plaques detail the history of the Portuguese Republic and the crucial role Setúbal played in this process. The city was, in fact, a pioneer in the republican movement, daring to take the revolutionary path to power in 1909.
The wood is, thus, a space that invites the discovery of the country's political history, connecting nature with civic education and the valorization of local historical heritage. It provides a tranquil setting for learning and meditating on one of the most transformative periods in Portugal's history.
With infrastructures designed for visitor comfort, Centenary Wood offers a welcoming environment for leisure moments. It features paths inviting relaxing strolls, benches for rest and contemplation, and waste bins that contribute to maintaining its beauty.
This green space is an example of how nature can be integrated into daily urban life, contributing significantly to the well-being of the population. It is a place where one can enjoy closer contact with the natural environment, without leaving the city.
