The Church of São Julião is located in the heart of the historic center of Setúbal, more precisely in Praça de Bocage. Its central position integrates it into the city's dynamics, making it easily accessible and a landmark in the urban landscape of Setúbal.
With its origins dating back to the second half of the 13th century, the Church of São Julião has witnessed and been shaped by various historical events. The temple underwent several reconstructions over the centuries, notably after the earthquakes of 1531 and 1755, which caused significant damage to the structure. The most significant works took place during the reign of King Manuel I, between 1516 and 1520, and later in the late 18th century.
In recognition of its undeniable historical and cultural importance to the national heritage, the church was classified as a National Monument in 1910.
In its architecture, the Church of São Julião preserves remarkable elements of the Manueline style, a unique artistic and architectural expression from Portugal. Its outstanding features include its impressive main portal, the north side portal, and the door of the bell tower, which reflect the characteristic ornamental richness of this period.
The interior of the temple reveals meticulous decoration, highlighted by the tile panels that line the walls, dating from 1790. These panels narrate episodes from the life of Saint Julian and Saint Basilissa, framed by Rococo-style details that enrich the ambiance.
Among the works of art housed in the church, a painting attributed to the renowned Renaissance painter Gregório Lopes or his workshop deserves special attention: the panel painting of the Adoration of the Magi, a piece of considerable artistic and historical value.
