Built in the late 15th century during the reign of King John II, the aqueduct served to carry water from the spring in Alferrara (Arca d’Água) to the center of Setúbal. This infrastructure was essential for supplying water to the city.
The aqueduct stretched for several kilometers and, along the route, intersected with the city walls.
In 1693, the Chafariz do Sapal (Sapal Fountain) was built, an important landmark in the water distribution system, located next to the Setúbal Town Hall.
With the growth of the city, much of the aqueduct disappeared. Today, only a few sections remain, one of which is visible in the city center, on Estrada dos Arcos (Arches Road), where the Vitória de Setúbal football field once stood.
In 1971, the aqueduct was classified as a Property of Public Interest, a distinction that recognizes its historical and cultural importance.
Despite only fragments remaining, the still visible sections are testimonies to the ingenuity and architecture of other eras. It is worth exploring the area to discover this historical connection of Setúbal with water.
