Situated in the picturesque town of Alcácer do Sal, the Church of the Friars' Convent, also known as the Church of Santo António, is harmoniously integrated into the urban fabric, in an area that offers a distinct perspective of the town. Positioned closer to the Sado River bed than to the elevations where the castle stands, its location allows visitors to explore a more intimate environment rooted in the daily life of the community.
This remarkable religious building dates back to the 16th century, its foundation having been driven by the Order of Friars Minor. Built to serve as a temple for the Convent of Santo António, the church witnessed centuries of history and devotion. Despite the extinction of religious orders in Portugal in the 19th century leading to the abandonment of the adjacent convent, the church remained an active center of worship, preserving its function and importance for the community of Alcácer do Sal.
The Church of the Friars' Convent or Santo António features an architectural fusion that reflects the various periods of its construction and remodelling. On the exterior, visitors can observe transitional elements, with a portal that exhibits Manueline-inspired features, giving it a unique identity. Inside, the artistic richness is evident, marked by notable examples of Baroque sacred art. Highlights include the sumptuous gilded carved altarpieces, which adorn the altars, and the presence of azulejo panels that enrich the atmosphere, creating a space of great beauty and introspection for visitors.
