The Castle of Santiago do Cacém, located in the city of the same name, in the municipality of Santiago do Cacém, district of Setúbal, is one of the most striking historical constructions in the Alentejo region. It is located on a hill near the Atlantic coast, with a privileged view of the surrounding plain.
Classified as a National Monument since 1910, this castle is a symbol of the region's historical past and attracts visitors interested in its architecture and the role it played over the centuries.
The area has traces of occupation since ancient times, with the presence of Celtic and Roman tribes. During Romanization, the site was part of Miróbriga, an important settlement of the time.
Throughout its history, the castle and the village passed through the hands of different peoples, such as the Visigoths, Muslims, and later, the Christians during the Reconquista. It was under Muslim rule that the village received the name Kassen.
In 1217, the castle was definitively handed over to the Kingdom of Portugal and the Order of Santiago, which rebuilt and fortified its walls. It was at this time that the village adopted its current name.
The castle has an almost rectangular plan, with walls reinforced by square and semicylindrical towers. The keep stands out in the complex. Adjacent to the castle is the Mother Church of Santiago, which combines elements of Romanesque and Gothic styles, as well as later alterations.
It lost military importance after the Restoration War in the 17th century, being used as a cemetery in the 19th century. In the 20th century, restoration works were carried out to preserve the monument.
The castle is surrounded by legends, such as that of the young woman who used strips of ox hide to demarcate the land where the castle was built by magical arts. Another legend tells of the Byzantine princess Vataça Láscaris, who conquered the castle by defeating the Muslim ruler on Santiago's Day.
In addition to its historical richness, the castle offers magnificent views of the Alentejo landscape, making it an ideal place to appreciate the tranquility and natural beauty of the region.
When visiting, explore not only the castle but also the Mother Church and the village, which hold fascinating stories and a typical Alentejo atmosphere.
