It is located in the parish of Santiago, in the town of Sesimbra, at Rua Cândido dos Reis, nº 17.
It has been a Property of Public Interest since 1977.
Built at the end of the 15th century, the chapel was part of a complex that included a hospital, intended to support the seafarers of Sesimbra. It provided assistance in basic health care, food, and religious services, including funerals.
The building belonged to the Brotherhood of the Holy Spirit of Sesimbra, subordinated to the Order of Santiago. This brotherhood evolved, in the 19th century, into the Maritime and Terrestrial Mutual Aid Association.
On the lower floor of the chapel, there were hospital facilities, used until the 1755 earthquake. Today, these ruins have been preserved and are part of the exhibition.
The chapel and the hospital were fundamental in providing spiritual and physical support to the inhabitants of Sesimbra for centuries.
Currently, the building is part of the municipality's heritage that can be visited. After a renovation, it was transformed into a museum, inaugurated in 2003.
, On the upper floor, there is an exhibition of sacred art.
, On the lower floor, you can see the consolidated ruins of the old medieval hospital.
It is located near the old Sesimbra riverfront, which connected the castle to the sea, which reinforces its connection to the maritime history of the town.
