Category: Religious Architecture > Buddhist Temple

District: Setúbal > Alcácer do Sal > Alcácer do Sal > Foros de Corte Pereira

Location

Located in the rural area of Foros de Corte Pereira, near Alcácer do Sal, this Stupa is set in a tranquil environment, characteristic of the Alentejo landscape. Its position offers a serene and calm setting, away from urban bustle, inviting contemplation and appreciation of the surrounding quietude.

Meaning and Symbolism

The Tashi Gomang Stupa, whose name translates as the Stupa of Many Doors, was inaugurated in 2017. This unique monument symbolizes the mind of the Buddhas and the diversity of ways in which Buddhist teachings can manifest to meet the needs of all beings. It represents a tribute to the first Dharma teachings by Buddha Shakyamuni, known as the First Turning of the Wheel of Dharma, and celebrates their dissemination and permanence throughout time.

Architecture and Contemplation

With a remarkable height of 16 meters, the Tashi Gomang Stupa stands out as one of the largest structures of its kind in the Western world. On its ground floor, it houses a temple dedicated to the actions and teachings of the Buddha, conceived as a place for the study of Buddhism and for the transmission of spiritual knowledge. Its construction integrates local elements, such as Alentejo marble, with sacred artifacts from Tibet and Nepal, including statues and a thousand small sculptures called tsa-tsas, creating a fusion between Portuguese culture and Buddhist tradition.
