The Solar dos Salemas is located in the historic center of Alcácer do Sal, a city rich in history and culture.
This building was commissioned by Rui Salema, a servant of Infante D. Luís, around 1525. Although it was built on land that did not belong to him, Rui Salema obtained royal authorization to use the family coat of arms, visible at the entrance of the house.
The manor is a mixture of Mannerist and Baroque styles, with a two-story internal courtyard. The original construction dates from the 16th century, but the building was rebuilt in the early 18th century. Highlights include the 16th-century arcade "loggia" on the main floor, and the entrance door with a broken pediment, decorated with the family coat of arms.
During the 20th century, the manor underwent several changes and, after being restored, served various functions, such as a fire station and a GNR (National Republican Guard) post.
Currently, the Solar dos Salemas is the headquarters of the Municipal Library of Alcácer do Sal, after undergoing restoration works that preserved its historical and architectural importance.
The building includes a balcony and a porch built in the 20th century, from which you can admire the view over the Sado River.
For tourists, in addition to exploring the library, the manor is an interesting place to learn about the history of the city and appreciate the architecture of the Mannerist and Baroque periods.
