Situated on the castle hill of Alcácer do Sal, it is one of the few examples of late Romanesque architecture in southern Portugal, built after the Christian reconquest of 1217 on the site of a former mosque.
During the Middle Ages, it was the main meeting place of the city, where important community decisions were announced.
It combines Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline, and Baroque elements, with emphasis on its three naves separated by columns and decorated capitals.
The side door, with well-preserved Romanesque arches, is the most striking feature. The main entrance, although simple, includes a window that illuminates the choir.
- 18th-century pulpit supported by an angel.
- Chapels decorated with 17th-century tiles and elaborate vaults.
- Historical tombstones, such as that of Rui de Melo de Noronha, a nobleman linked to royalty.
It offers a privileged view over the castle and integrates harmoniously into the urban landscape of Alcácer do Sal.
