The castle is situated atop a hill next to the Sado River, offering stunning views over the city of Alcácer do Sal and the Alentejo fields.
This location has a human occupation that dates back to prehistory, passing through Phoenician, Roman, Islamic, and Medieval periods. Each civilization left its mark on the castle and the territory.
For centuries, it was a crucial fortress for the defense of the region, due to its strategic position in controlling the routes between the Tagus, the Alentejo, and the Algarve.
It was classified as a National Monument in 1910, which demonstrates its historical and architectural value.
One of the main attractions, the crypt reveals more than 27 centuries of history. Here you can find ruins from different periods, from the Iron Age to the 19th century, with vestiges of medieval walls, Roman structures, and a sanctuary dated from the Roman Era.
The castle walls have traces of about 30 towers, such as the Adaga Tower, the Clock Tower, and the Algique Tower. The gates of the wall, such as the New Gate and the Iron Gate, are also points of interest.
Part of the castle's facilities has been transformed into the Pousada D. Afonso II, where you can enjoy modern comfort in a historic environment.
The castle was the scene of significant historical events, such as battles during the Reconquista and the permanence of a religious order until the 19th century.
