Location

The Roman Ruins of Miróbriga are located in the municipality of Santiago do Cacém, in the district of Setúbal, more specifically in the area of Celões. This archaeological site stands in an Alentejo landscape of gentle undulations, offering a broad perspective of its surroundings, characterized by Mediterranean vegetation and open fields. Its elevated position allows for a serene contemplation of the surrounding countryside, creating a setting conducive to exploring the past.

History and Legacy

Its history dates back to Roman times, making it one of the most important testimonies of Roman presence in the southwest Iberian Peninsula. This site was a thriving urban center, with a vibrant community and economic life, witnessing centuries of Roman occupation and development. The name Miróbriga, of Celtic origin, suggests an occupation prior to the Roman period, although the settlement's peak occurred under imperial rule.

Urban Layout and Architecture

The ruins reveal the well-planned structure of a Roman city, with its paved streets and the remains of public and private buildings. It is possible to discern the layout of the forum, which was the center of civic, economic, and religious life, flanked by public buildings essential to the city's administration. Notable are the baths, bathing complexes that were a fulcrum of Roman social life, and the remains of houses and shops that made up the urban fabric.

One of the most impressive elements of Miróbriga is its circus, an infrastructure intended for chariot races. It is one of the few Roman examples known in Portuguese territory and highlights the importance of leisure and entertainment activities for the inhabitants of the ancient city.

Life in the Roman City

Visiting Miróbriga is an opportunity for an immersion into the culture and daily life of a Roman city. The site allows for an understanding of the architectural and urbanistic ingenuity of the time, as well as how populations organized and interacted in their space. This archaeological heritage constitutes a vital link with the ancient history of Portugal, being an eloquent testimony to the Romanization of this region of Alentejo and the complexity of urban life two millennia ago.
