Moinhos River Beach, also known as Alcochete Beach, is located along the banks of the Tagus River, in the town of Alcochete. It is part of the area designated Moinhos Beach, extending along a significant stretch of riverfront sandy expanse. Its location offers a wide perspective over the Tagus estuary, with a view that reaches the iconic Vasco da Gama Bridge, contributing to a calm and engaging atmosphere.
The name Moinhos Beach (Mills Beach) originates from the presence of four old windmills that stand along its sandy stretch. These structures, now deactivated, are a testament to local history, recalling the times when they were used to grind the region's cereals, which were later transported by river. Their silhouette adds a distinctive element to the beach's natural landscape, marking it with a note of historical and cultural value.
Characterized by an extensive sandy area stretching for about two kilometers, this river beach benefits from the waters of the Tagus. During the summer months, especially with the rising tide, the waters are calm and mild, inviting moments of leisure and swimming. The constant presence of a soft and regular wind is a particularity of this location, creating favorable conditions for water sports such as kitesurfing and paddle surfing, or simply for observing kites flying.
In addition to the possibility of enjoying a swim or practicing water sports, the beach invites relaxed strolls along the water, where one can appreciate the surrounding landscape. Along the riverside promenade, there are facilities for outdoor physical activities, such as cycling, resting platforms, walkways, and fixed exercise bars. Near the sandy area, there is also a space dedicated to skateboarding. In the late afternoon, the beach provides a privileged natural setting to observe the sunset over the Tagus, with the Vasco da Gama Bridge as a backdrop. The location also features green areas and showers, for visitors' greater convenience.
