Praia do Segundo Torrão is located on the south bank of the Tagus River estuary, where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. Situated in the municipality of Almada, in the Trafaria area, it offers a distinct perspective of the landscape on the opposite bank. To the west, the sandy beach borders the Bairro do Segundo Torrão, a local community established along the coast, and to the east, it borders a port and industrial area.
This beach is characterized by a vast and extensive sandy area. Along much of its length, the sandy area is accompanied by a well-defined dune system. At certain times, the interaction of tides and runoff can lead to the temporary formation of a small lagoon in the more interior area, behind the dunes, creating a unique natural environment.
Due to its location in the transition zone between the river and the ocean, Praia do Segundo Torrão is subject to intense natural dynamics. Tides and currents constantly shape the coastline. This interaction with the force of the water is a characteristic of the place, which has historically coexisted with these phenomena, including occasional sea encroachment. A visible stone barrier exists on the sandy beach, part of the local coastal defense structures.
The immediate adjacency of the Bairro do Segundo Torrão to the beach is a distinctive element. This community has a long-standing connection with the sea and the river, with traditions linked to fishing life and close coexistence with the coastal environment. The beach, therefore, shares its space with the daily life of this residential area, which has become an integral part of the local landscape.
