Praia do Rei is situated on the Atlantic Ocean coastline, forming an integral part of the extensive sandy beach of Costa da Caparica, in the municipality of Almada. Its geographical setting is within the area known as Acácias Sul.
To the east, the beach is bordered by the impressive Fossil Cliff of Costa da Caparica, a prominent geological formation. At the top of this cliff, a portion of the Mata Nacional dos Medos (Medos National Forest) extends, contributing to the natural surrounding landscape of the area.
This sandy area boasts considerable width and extension, providing vast sandy space for visitors. It is flanked by a well-developed dune system, which plays a crucial role in coastal protection and the preservation of local biodiversity.
To allow access to the beach while simultaneously safeguarding the vegetation and structure of the dunes, wooden walkways have been built. These elevated pathways over the sand offer a practical way to move around without disturbing the dune ecosystem.
An interesting natural phenomenon observed at Praia do Rei is the formation of a small lagoon during low tide periods. This temporary accumulation of saltwater creates a calm and shallow mirror of water.
This characteristic makes the beach particularly appealing at certain times of the day, offering a different space within the sandy area itself, distinct from the wave-breaking zone.
Praia do Rei has been recognized for its quality over the years, receiving various certifications. Among these are the Blue Flag, an international symbol of environmental quality and sustainable beach management, and the designation of Accessible Beach, which indicates the existence of conditions facilitating access and use by people with reduced mobility.
This beach is known for attracting a diverse public, with a notable presence of families with children, especially during the summer months. Its atmosphere tends to be lively, reflecting the presence of youth groups and, occasionally, holiday camps that choose this location.
