Situated on the Atlantic coast, Praia do Queimado is located in the town of Porto Covo, belonging to the municipality of Sines. This sandy beach is part of the vast protected area of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. Its coastal position allows, on clear days, for the silhouette of Ilha do Pessegueiro to be seen on the horizon.
The beach is characterized by its modest dimensions. It features a sandy expanse traversed by a stream that flows into the sea, visually dividing the space. The surroundings are marked by the presence of rock formations, especially noticeable in some areas of the beach, contrasting with areas of rolled stones that can be found further south. This rocky environment fosters an interesting biological diversity.
The peculiar name of this beach is associated with a local legend dating back to the period of the Portuguese Civil War, in the first half of the 19th century. The story tells that, during this conflict, an image of a saint from the fortress on Ilha do Pessegueiro was brought to this location and was the target of an attempted burning. However, according to popular belief, the saint did not burn, thus giving rise to the toponym 'Queimado'.
