Category: Nature > Beach

District: Setúbal > Sesimbra > Sesimbra

Location

Situated in Sesimbra Bay, Praia do Ouro is integrated into the town's urban fabric, extending from the fishing port area to the vicinity of the historic Forte de Santiago. Its central location offers easy access and integrates it into the environment of the old fishing community. It is naturally sheltered by the surrounding elevations, namely those of the Arrábida Natural Park, which contributes to the tranquility of its waters and less exposure to wind.

Environment and Water Quality

Praia do Ouro is known for its generally calm, transparent, and shallow waters near the sandy area. This characteristic, combined with a seabed without significant irregularities, makes it particularly inviting for safe swimming. Water quality is consistently monitored and has been awarded the Golden Quality distinction. The beach has also flown the European Blue Flag for several years, recognizing its compliance with environmental and safety criteria.

An Inviting Sandy Beach

Praia do Ouro's extensive sandy beach has a gentle slope, facilitating movement along the coast. This physical characteristic, combined with the tranquility of the waters, makes this space a popular spot for families and children. The seafront is bordered by an elevated pedestrian walkway, the result of a revitalization project, which allows for strolls and better enjoyment of the coastal landscape.

Focus on Accessibility

Praia do Ouro stands out for its commitment to accessibility. It has been consecutively awarded the Accessible Beach, Beach for All flag, a distinction that recognizes efforts to create enjoyable conditions for people with reduced mobility. The infrastructure includes adapted pathways that facilitate access to the sandy area, as well as dedicated support areas.

Tradition and Landscape

Between May and October, the beach can be the setting for Arte Xávega. This is a traditional seine fishing method, carried out in a context that preserves the cultural heritage linked to the sea. The presence of the Forte de Santiago, a 17th-century structure facing the bay, adds a striking historical element to the beach's landscape, defining one of its boundaries and recalling Sesimbra's historical connection to the sea.
