Praia do Monte Velho is located on the coastal strip of the municipality of Santiago do Cacém, integrated into the urban area known as Bairro da Atalaia, in the locality of Santo André. It is a beach directly facing the Atlantic Ocean.
Access to the beach is from the end of a paved road, where there is a parking area. The final path to the sand involves crossing the dunes via pedestrian walkways.
This beach is also identified by a different designation: Praia do Porto das Carretas.
Praia do Monte Velho is distinguished by its extensive and light-colored sandy beach, which stretches for approximately 1.8 kilometers. It is flanked by a significant dune system.
Beyond the dunes, and towards the interior, the landscape transitions to taller vegetation, approaching pine forest.
The area where the beach is located is included within the perimeter of a Natural Reserve, which reflects the importance of its surrounding landscape.
As an ocean beach, the sea at Praia do Monte Velho can present variable conditions, potentially experiencing some choppiness.
It is essential to know that this is an unsupervised beach. It does not have support infrastructure or lifeguard surveillance on the sand, so particular attention and caution are recommended when deciding to enter the water.
Given the extent of the sandy beach and the absence of supervision, Praia do Monte Velho tends to be a location with low attendance, providing an atmosphere of greater tranquility.
The access path via the walkways over the dunes is part of the experience of reaching the beach, offering a perspective on the natural landscape before reaching the sea.
