Meco Beach is located on the west coast of the municipality of Sesimbra, near the village of Meco. It is a very long beach, with about four kilometers of sand. Its natural surroundings are characterized by the presence of cliffs, a dune system, and pine forests that protect the coast, contributing to a wilder and more sheltered environment.
Officially known as Praia do Moinho de Baixo (Lower Mill Beach), although there are no traces of a mill on site, this extensive strip of sand is popularly called Meco Beach. Its fame began to emerge in the 1970s, when its isolation and difficult access made it a refuge for a group of foreigners and, later, for figures connected to Lisbon's cultural and social life.
The landscape of Meco Beach is shaped by distinct natural elements. Along the coast, cliffs offer protection and a scenic backdrop. An extensive dune system separates the pine forest from the sandy beach. Near one of the accesses, there is a small stream that crosses the dunes to the sea. The area is integrated into the Fossil Cliff reserve, known for its geological formations and fossil dunes. To the south, the sandy area is interrupted by a notable rock formation.
The sea at Meco Beach can sometimes be rough, with waves breaking near the waterline and strong currents. The depth increases rapidly near the shore. For these reasons, it is advisable to be careful when swimming. The beach has lifeguard surveillance during the bathing season for the greater safety of bathers.
Meco Beach holds the Blue Flag distinction, a recognition that attests to the quality of its water and the environmental management of the site. Furthermore, it is a beach with a long history linked to naturism, having been a pioneer in Portugal in this practice. The area designated for naturism is legalized in the southern part of the sandy beach, beyond the large dune.
