Praia do Lago is situated in the municipality of Sines, positioned north of the urban area. It is part of the area known as Ribeira de Moinhos and is delimited to the south by the mouth of the Ribeira dos Moinhos, where it meets the Atlantic Ocean.
Although located in an area that includes some industrial activity nearby, the beach offers a wide coastline directly exposed to the sea.
One of the distinctive aspects of this beach is the great extent of its sandy area. The sand area is considerably wide, providing ample space along the coast, even during high tide. This characteristic gives visitors a feeling of openness and spaciousness.
Praia do Lago is characterized by the presence of a dune system that extends along its entire length. These dune formations are an important natural element that contributes to the configuration and environment of the coastal landscape at this location.
The location where Praia do Lago is found today has a history linked to agriculture. In the past, this area was used for rice cultivation, a fact that reflects a different land use in the region in other times.
Locally, the beach is sometimes referred to as Cova do Lago.
