The beach is located on the southern slope of the municipality of Sesimbra, nestled between limestone cliffs near the village of Azóia. The protected sandy area opens to the Atlantic, offering a wide horizon and a blue-green sea.

Also known as Praia do Penedo or Praia da Tranca, it is part of the Professor Luiz Saldanha marine area, valued for the biological diversity of its rocky bottoms. An isolated block of stone, a short distance from the waterline, adds drama to the landscape.

Natural Environment

The seabed is a mix of rounded gravel with strips of dark sand, surrounded by slopes covered in Mediterranean scrub. At the southern end, a natural arch sculpted in the rock frames the sea and creates a highly appreciated photographic setting.

The clear waters reveal algae and small fish, making it popular with those who practice free diving and snorkeling. During high tide, the available space diminishes, but the cliffs themselves cast pleasant shaded areas.

Access and Safety

The hiking trail starting from the plateau requires some physical preparation and a sure footing. The final section takes place over inclined slabs, with the support of a rope fixed to the rock; the steep incline can cause dizziness and requires extra care when the ground is wet.

It is recommended to choose dry weather and wear sturdy footwear. The route is not suitable for small children or those with limited mobility.

Beach Experience

After the descent, visitors find a generally quiet environment, as the difficulty of the path deters large crowds. In the height of summer, pleasure boats sometimes appear, but the absence of buildings preserves the sense of isolation.

The clarity of the water and the gradual depth invite invigorating swims. The contrast between the dark sand, the rugged cliffs, and the clear sea amply compensates for the effort of the walk.
