Praia do Banho is located integrated into the front of the town of Porto Covo. It is flanked by rock formations and cliffs that frame it. Access to the sandy area is usually via a staircase. Its sheltered position, part of the coast in the municipality of Sines, is located within the protected area of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park.
The name of this beach derives from an ancient popular tradition, which takes place annually on August 29th. On this day, many flock to the beach to take a dip in the sea, a custom of cultural character with origins dating back to pagan practices. The tradition, symbolically associated with the blessing of Saint John the Baptist, suggests that this specific bath "is worth nine" and has regenerative or purifying purposes. It was a deeply rooted habit, especially for people from the interior, who traveled to the coast on this date.
This is a beach with a relatively small sandy area. However, the available sand area for visitors varies considerably with the tidal cycle. During low tide, the sandy area becomes considerably more extensive, offering more space. The beach is nestled between cliffs, which gives it a more secluded and wind-protected environment, making it inviting for swimming at various times of the year. A particularity is the existence of a natural passage between the rocks that, at low tide, allows connection and access to the neighboring beach, Praia da Gaivota.
