Location

Albarquel Beach is situated in a privileged position, very close to the urban centre of Setúbal and easily accessible. Located in a bay, it offers wide views encompassing the Tróia Peninsula, on the other side of the Sado estuary, and the skyline of the city of Setúbal, with the imposing Serra da Arrábida as its backdrop. Its proximity to the city makes it a convenient option for a day of leisure by the sea. It can be accessed on foot via a specially created promenade that connects it to Albarquel Urban Park.

Beach Area and Bathing Environment

This beach features a considerable sandy area, stretching for about 400 metres. The waters, influenced by the Sado estuary, are generally calm and have mild temperatures, making them inviting for swimming, especially for families with children. Water quality is subject to regular monitoring. The sandy area is delimited, on one side, by a particular rock formation and, on the other, by a pier where Albarquel Fort can be seen.

Inclusive Beach

Albarquel Beach stands out for its focus on accessibility for all visitors. It was awarded the "Accessible Beach" prize, a recognition of the investment made to improve enjoyment conditions. It provides infrastructures and support services that facilitate access to the sand and water for people with reduced mobility or visual impairments, including adapted information and specialised support during the bathing season. The beach is supervised, also featuring a video surveillance system to enhance security.

Historical and Natural Setting

One of the distinctive points in the beach's landscape is the presence of the Albarquel Fort. This construction dates back to the 17th century and played a role in defending the Sado estuary mouth and the local port. The fort has recently been restored. Behind the fort, and in the surrounding area closer to the mountains, there are still traces of a bunker and tunnels associated with the Second World War period. The surrounding natural environment, with the proximity of Arrábida and the estuary's dynamics, contributes to the unique character of this location.
