Situated on the western coast of the municipality of Sesimbra, Lagoa de Albufeira Beach is located where the vast Lagoa de Albufeira meets the Atlantic Ocean. It is characterized by the imposing presence of large dunes that separate it from the lagoon and is flanked by a pine forest area.
It is found in the area of the locality with the same name, Lagoa de Albufeira, providing close contact with nature, despite being part of an urbanized area.
This beach stands out for offering two distinct aquatic experiences side by side. On one side, the open sea of the Atlantic Ocean, generally with waves and subject to winds, ideal for those seeking activities like surfing or bodyboarding. On the other, the calm and sheltered waters of the lagoon, protected by the dune barrier, creating a safe and serene environment, particularly appreciated by families with children.
The diversity of the waters makes this location attractive for different sports. The lagoon area, with its calm waters, offers excellent conditions for sports such as windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing, and canoeing. On the sea side, with more waves and wind, surfers and bodyboarders find the ideal environment for their activities.
The Lagoa de Albufeira area, where the beach is located, has been part of the National Ecological Reserve since 1987, being recognized as a special protection zone for avifauna. It is an important habitat for various species of aquatic birds, which can be observed along the lagoon's margins and in the more interior marshland areas, using the site for feeding or reproduction.
Lagoa de Albufeira is fed by saltwater from the sea, a vital connection maintained through a channel. This channel, which opens annually (generally in spring) to allow for the renewal of the lagoon's waters, is a point of interest due to how sand and natural currents interact, sometimes leading to its closure, which requires intervention to be reopened. The lagoon is also distinguished by being the deepest in Portugal, reaching about fifteen meters in some points, although it is naturally shallower near the channel connecting to the sea.
Beyond its natural and sporting characteristics, Lagoa de Albufeira has a historical connection. It was known as a favored location and retreat for leisure and rest for King D. Carlos I.
