Located in the municipality of Sines, next to the village of Porto Covo, Praia da Ilha do Pessegueiro is situated directly opposite the island that gives it its name. This extensive sandy beach is part of the protected area of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, which lends it a predominantly natural and serene atmosphere.
The area in front of Ilha do Pessegueiro has a long history connected to the sea. The channel between the island and the mainland once served as a sheltered harbour for vessels, used by civilizations such as the Carthaginians and Romans. On the island itself, traces of an ancient Roman fish-salting factory are still visible, suggesting that the origin of the name "Pessegueiro" may be linked to the Latin word for fish ("piscis") rather than the fruit tree.
In the 18th century, there was a project to build a large seaport, whose unused stone blocks can still be observed. On the cliff adjacent to the beach, the Forte do Pessegueiro stands, built to reinforce coastal defense.
Characterized by an extensive sandy beach, Praia da Ilha do Pessegueiro offers an environment of tranquility and direct contact with nature. Integrated into the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, it maintains a serene atmosphere. It is an ideal place for long walks along the coast, enjoying the view of Ilha do Pessegueiro and the imposing fort located on the neighboring cliff. The waters tend to be clear, complementing the scenic beauty of the place.
