Praia da Fonte da Telha is located in the municipality of Almada, within the town of the same name. It is situated in a bay, at the foot of the imposing Fossil Cliff, a geological feature that defines much of this coastline. It is a very long beach that is part of the coastline west of the Setúbal Peninsula, flanked by the forest area known as Mata Nacional dos Medos or Pinhal do Rei. From here, the view extends along the coast, offering a glimpse of Cape Espichel further south. The vast sandy area is entirely contained within the municipality of Almada.
The history of Praia da Fonte da Telha is closely linked to fishing. In the mid-19th century, fishermen from Costa da Caparica began seeking out these waters for seasonal fishing, a practice that led to their gradual settlement in the area. Initially, they built simple huts, which eventually became permanent homes for themselves, their families, and other companions. Over time, more people, including those from Charneca da Caparica, began to populate the area. By the early 20th century, a community had been established, though its fishing identity remains to this day.
Praia da Fonte da Telha is distinguished by its vast stretch of sand, which extends for more than two kilometers along the coast. It is bathed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, which sometimes have a strong swell, making them popular with water sports enthusiasts. The landscape is marked by the presence of the imposing Fossil Cliff, an ancient geological formation that rises behind the beach and follows the coastline as far as the eye can see, creating a unique and highly scenic natural setting.
Frequented by many, Praia da Fonte da Telha offers an environment suitable for both relaxing on the extensive sandy beach and engaging in water activities, taking advantage of the sea conditions. The beach is divided into several zones, which provide different atmospheres, some more family-oriented and others more secluded. At the northern and southern ends of the beach, it is possible to find areas where naturism is practiced. A path parallel to the strip of sand makes it easy to move along this extensive coast, allowing visitors to explore it in its entirety.
