Praia da Costa de Santo André is located within the area of the same name, on the Atlantic coastline of the municipality of Santiago do Cacém. It is situated next to the Santo André Lagoon, to the east, and is part of the protected area of the Santo André and Sancha Lagoons Nature Reserve.
This beach stands out for its extensive sandy shore, which stretches for approximately 3.4 kilometers. It is characterized by golden sand and generally clear waters. Along much of its length, the beach is bordered by a dune system that hosts diverse coastal vegetation, contributing to the natural richness of the area.
As an oceanic beach, Costa de Santo André offers conditions that vary with the tides and sea state. Although it may have waves, near the area where the Santo André Lagoon seasonally connects with the sea, small areas of calmer water sometimes form, providing a more sheltered environment.
The environmental quality of Praia da Costa de Santo André is recognized by several awards granted annually. It has been distinguished with the Blue Flag, which certifies good environmental practices, safety, and water quality. It also receives the Golden Flag from Quercus, a symbol of sustained excellence in bathing water quality over several years. Additionally, it is classified as an Accessible Beach and holds the status of a Zero Pollution Beach.
Costa de Santo André has a historical connection to fishing activities. In the 19th century, around 1855, fishermen from Ílhavo temporarily settled in the area, practicing the traditional fishing method known as arte da xávega. This cultural heritage is commemorated in the traditional Feast of São Romão, which includes the re-enactment of the ancient "Baths of São Romão". This festivity dates back to the time when inland populations came to the coast for a day of socializing and sea bathing, often arriving in an ethnographic procession and celebrating on the sand.
The natural conditions of the beach allow for various forms of enjoyment. The vast sandy expanse is ideal for seaside walks. When there are waves, the beach is sought after for water sports such as windsurfing, kitesurfing, surfing, or bodyboarding. The calmer areas, sometimes formed near the lagoon's connection, are suitable for moments of greater tranquility in the water. The Costa de Santo André area is also known for its tolerance of naturism.
To support visitors, the beach has essential facilities and services available during the bathing season. It offers prepared access for people with reduced mobility. There are showers and public toilet facilities. Beach surveillance is ensured by the presence of lifeguards during the defined bathing period. There is also a parking area available near the sandy shore.
