Located in the urbanization area or the area with the same name, Praia da Cerca Nova is situated near the village of Porto Covo, in the municipality of Sines.
It is part of the protected area of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, embraced by high cliffs that protect it from the wind and give it a remarkable natural setting. The main access to the sandy beach is via a staircase on the northern slope of the beach.
Praia da Cerca Nova stands out for its natural beauty, marked by a reasonably sized sandy area and transparent waters whose quality is clearly noticeable. The sand has a golden hue, characteristic of this area of the Alentejo coast.
The scenery is dominated by the imposing cliffs that flank the sandy area, dotted with rock formations and small islets that enrich the landscape and create interesting nooks to explore. A prominent cliff in the central area naturally divides the beach into two distinct parts, making it possible to cross between them during low tide.
Those who visit Cerca Nova find a generally tranquil environment conducive to relaxation. The beach invites moments of relaxation in the sun, strolls along the sandy beach, or simply contemplating the coastal landscape and the sound of waves breaking on the rocks and sand.
The waters, sheltered from the wind by the cliffs, allow for swimming for much of the year, although the presence of rocks in certain areas of the sandy beach requires attention for those wishing to swim. It is also a place where activities such as fishing and shellfish gathering can be practiced, as well as water sports like stand-up paddle or kayak, taking advantage of the calm sea conditions.
Beyond its scenic value, the area surrounding Praia da Cerca Nova has a legacy linked to ancestral fishing traditions and maritime routes that shaped the coastal identity of the region. This historical connection is subtly present in the atmosphere of the place and in the way of life of the surrounding community.
Ecologically, the beach and surrounding waters are part of a relevant and monitored coastal ecosystem, serving as a habitat for various species of marine life and birds that can be observed on the cliffs and coastline. The local biodiversity is a natural aspect to appreciate during the visit.
