Baleeira Beach

Category: Nature > Beach

District: Setúbal > Sesimbra > Sesimbra

Location

Praia da Baleeira is located on the coast of the municipality of Sesimbra, nestled in a secluded bay. It is situated southwest of the town of Azóia and is part of the protected landscape of the Arrábida Natural Park, offering views of the vast Atlantic Ocean.

Its natural position, set between imposing cliffs, gives it a unique feeling of shelter and seclusion. This cove is located near Cape Espichel, on a stretch of coast known for its natural beauty and remarkable geology.

The Coastline and the Waters

This beach is distinguished by its extensive shoreline, which is not made of fine sand, but rather of pebbles and shingle that cover its entire surface. Walking on these stones shapes the physical experience on-site, and appropriate footwear is recommended.

The waters of the cove are generally calm and remarkably clear, inviting leisurely moments in the water, whether for swimming or observing marine life. Due to its south-facing orientation and the protection of the surrounding cliffs, Praia da Baleeira tends to be more sheltered from the northern winds, which can result in a calmer and milder environment by the water.

The Arrival and the Scenery

Access to Praia da Baleeira is not direct, involving a descent down a trail that runs along the cliff to the base of the cove. This path is made of stones and, in some sections, has a considerable incline, requiring attention and care during the descent and ascent.

This feature of its access helps the beach maintain a more private atmosphere, making it less frequented than other more easily accessible beaches. The imposing cliffs that flank the bay create a dramatic and isolated setting, providing scenic backdrops for those who appreciate the beauty of the wild coast.

Traces of the Past

Historically, Praia da Baleeira served as a refuge for local fishermen. The natural protection the bay offers against adverse sea conditions, particularly against the prevailing winds, made it a safe place to seek shelter over the ages.

On the east-facing slope of the beach, the remains of old structures can be seen. These ruins are silent witnesses to the human presence in this isolated location in past eras, linking the natural landscape to the history of the region's fishing community.
