Aberta Nova Beach is located in the Melides area, in the municipality of Grândola. Access to the beach area is generally via a path that crosses pine forests and local vegetation, providing an initial immersion in the natural landscape. Near the arrival points, there are areas where one can enjoy a wide view of the coast, stretching from Sines to the Arrábida Mountain Range. The sandy beach is framed by sandstone cliffs characteristic of this part of the Alentejo coast.
This beach is recognized for its scenic and environmental excellence, distinctions underscored by awards such as the Blue Flag and Gold Quality. This recognition reflects not only the beauty of the location but also unique natural values, including geological aspects, the diversity of flora and fauna present in the surroundings, and the fact that it maintains a distinctly naturalized environment with minimal human intervention.
The sandy expanse of Aberta Nova is vast, inviting long walks along the coastline. It is flanked by the aforementioned sandstone cliffs, which create an imposing backdrop. Physical access to the sandy area itself, from the arrival points, is via a wooden walkway that includes steps, which implies some difficulty for people with reduced mobility to reach the sand.
The sea conditions at Aberta Nova Beach are often favorable for wave-related activities such as surfing and bodyboarding, available for much of the year. Sport fishing also finds a good spot here. The configuration of the cliffs also allows, for those interested, the practice of hang gliding, taking advantage of the local topography, although without dedicated support infrastructure for this modality.
For those visiting the beach, some basic facilities are available that contribute to comfort. There are public sanitary facilities in the support area. During the bathing season, user safety is ensured by the presence of surveillance through lifeguards.
