The tower was designed in 1936 by architect José Ângelo Cottinelli Telmo and inaugurated in 1938, at the request of the Portuguese Railways Company. The aim was to support the railway operations of the Pinhal Novo station.
It is a prominent work in Portuguese railway architecture and is associated with a period of modernization of railway infrastructure in Portugal.
Despite proposals for its demolition, the tower was preserved thanks to a local movement that had the support of the Order of Architects. In 2002, it was classified as a property of municipal interest by the Municipal Assembly of Palmela.
The tower remains in its original location, even after renovations at the station. It is misaligned with the platforms and tracks, showing that the initial design of the new station foresaw its removal.
In 2023, new works were announced to reconfigure the station's tracks, scheduled for 2027-2029. The future of the tower remains a point of interest for those who appreciate historical and railway heritage.
The tower is an example of how railway history and the fight for heritage preservation can coexist, being a place of interest for those visiting the Palmela region and Pinhal Novo.
