The Pegões Railway Station is located in the town of Pegões-Gare, belonging to the municipality of Montijo. Its location is central, in the Largo José Ribeiro Santana, also known as Largo da Estação, and close to Avenida 25 de Abril. It is a reference point for the surrounding area, and it is worth noting that part of the railway facilities extend into the neighboring municipality of Palmela, highlighting its importance as a regional interface.
This location is part of the emblematic Linha do Alentejo, a route of great relevance in the history of Portuguese railways. The section connecting the station to Barreiro and Bombel was inaugurated on June 15, 1857, marking its presence in the railway network for over a century and a half. The station represents a testament to the expansion of transport and how it shaped the development of communities over time.
The main building, dedicated to passengers, is situated on the north side of the railway track, featuring a typical layout of railway constructions of the era. Throughout its existence, the structure has undergone several interventions. In the years 1933 and 1934, for example, the passenger building benefited from repair works, which contributed to its conservation. These maintenance efforts allowed its aesthetic and functionality to be maintained, revealing the architectural characteristics that define it to this day.
