Located in Largo do Chafariz D. Maria I, in the center of Palmela, Setúbal district, this fountain is one of the town's attractions.
Built in 1792, during the reign of D. Maria I, it replaced an older fountain from the 16th century, ordered to be built by D. Jorge, master of the Order of Santiago.
It is a typical example of the Baroque style of the time, highlighting the central pediment that displays the royal coat of arms of D. Maria I and, on the sides, the old arms of Palmela.
Although it is currently a decorative piece, it served as a public water source in the past.
The square where the fountain is located is a quiet space, ideal for a break or for taking pictures.
It represents a milestone in local history and Palmela's connection to the monarchy and the Order of Santiago.
Palmela was under Arab rule for several centuries, and the influence can be seen in some features of the region's architecture.
Although the water is not drinkable, the place is perfect for appreciating history and taking beautiful photos.
