The Bacalhoa Palace and Estate is located in Vila Fresca de Azeitão, a locality in the municipality of Setúbal. This historical complex is situated in the zona dos Castanhos, an area that preserves the essence and tranquility of Azeitão, providing a peaceful and serene environment for its visitors, surrounded by the characteristic landscape of this region.
Classified as a National Monument, the Bacalhoa Palace and Estate represents one of the most significant examples of 16th-century architecture in Portugal. Its history dates back to the 15th century, when it served as a pleasure estate for Infante D. João, son of King D. João I. Later, the estate was inherited by his daughter, D. Brites, mother of King D. Manuel I, who was responsible for important construction works, including its characteristic walls with domed turrets. The name "Bacalhoa" is believed to have emerged in the late 16th century, associated with a descendant of the House of Albuquerque, married to D. Jerónimo Manuel, known as "Bacalhau" (Codfish).
As one explores the Bacalhoa Palace, a notable fusion of architectural styles that have been layered over the centuries can be observed. From the ogival vaults that hark back to its earliest times, through the elegant Renaissance-style windows, to the 16th-century ceramic decorative elements, the estate is a true repository of art. Particularly noteworthy are its tiles, some dating back to 1565 and signed by the ceramist Francisco de Matos, as well as Flemish faience medallions that frame busts of historical figures. The "pleasure house" and the robust pavilions near the large tank are other elements that enrich this architectural ensemble.
The Bacalhoa Estate, with its vast areas and the striking presence of a large water tank, invites an experience of tranquility and discovery. Although it has undergone some modifications throughout its more than five centuries of existence, the site has managed to preserve its essence and the original ambiance of a pleasure estate. The presence of elements such as the small towers and the richness of artistic details in tiles lend the space a unique atmosphere, where history and beauty meet harmoniously.
