The Rio Frio Palace stands in an isolated and elevated position, in the heart of the village of Rio Frio, in the parish of Pinhal Novo, Palmela municipality. It is surrounded by a vast rural landscape, characteristic of this region, offering a sense of tranquility and connection to nature. A Past of Agricultural Grandeur

Built at the beginning of the 20th century, between 1909 and 1919, the Rio Frio Palace was the center of one of Portugal's largest and most innovative agricultural properties. The estate, once spanning thousands of hectares, was renowned for its grand wine production, even possessing one of the world's largest vineyards at the time, with millions of grapevines. The vision of its founder, José Maria dos Santos, brought technological advances to agriculture, including the construction of an 18-kilometer canal to optimize production and drainage, even adapting to rice cultivation during times of crisis. This palace reflects the ambition and success of an era deeply connected to the land and farming.

Architecture and Artistic Richness

The Rio Frio Palace features an imposing neoclassical design, with a T-shaped plan and a main facade adorned with two superimposed galleries. Its architectural project is attributed to José Luís Monteiro, although the exact authorship has been subject to some uncertainty due to lost records. One of the palace's most notable features is its profuse tile decoration, by the renowned master Jorge Colaço. These artistic panels cover both the exterior and interior, vividly depicting themes related to the estate's rural life, the wine cycle, hunting scenes, and bucolic landscapes of the floodplain. Inside, one can appreciate the elegance of the spaces, such as the spacious hall with polychrome stone flooring and Moleanos stone walls, and rooms like the Dining Room and the Mares' Room, which display magnificent tile sets telling stories of the property and family life.

The surroundings of the Rio Frio Palace invite visitors to stroll through its gardens and the adjacent woods, providing an immersive nature experience. The predominant silence, sometimes only broken by the wind rustling through the golden fields, offers a refuge from the urban pace.
