The Manuel Cargaleiro Arts Workshop is situated in the Cavaquinhas area, in the locality and municipality of Seixal, and is part of the extensive Quinta da Fidalga estate. Its position offers visitors a unique perspective of the Tagus River estuary and the city of Lisbon.
An extensive landscaped garden surrounds the building, complementing the visitor experience and contributing to a serene and inviting atmosphere, ideal for cultural contemplation.
The design of this building was by architects José Luís Ferreira and Nuno Pinho. The Arts Workshop project is characterized by a fluid and harmonious integration between its architectural elements and the surrounding natural environment.
Developed on a single floor plan, its particular volume was conceived to create a succession of spaces that articulate and complement each other, both internally and externally. The exhibition hall, for instance, features an organic "S" shape, allowing for remarkable adaptability for various art exhibitions. Natural light is meticulously controlled through strategically positioned glazing, ensuring ideal conditions for contemplating the displayed works.
The Arts Workshop celebrates the life and work of master Manuel Cargaleiro (1927-2024), a figure of great importance in Portuguese art. An internationally renowned painter, draughtsman, and ceramist, Cargaleiro maintained a deep connection to Seixal, particularly to Quinta da Fidalga, a place of memories from his childhood and youth.
His work, marked by a vibrant use of color and a unique sensitivity, is a testament to his capacity for innovation and for transcending artistic boundaries. The space therefore houses works by the master, while also serving as a stage for the promotion of contemporary art in general.
This cultural facility has the primary vocation of promoting contemporary art. In addition to exhibiting pieces by master Manuel Cargaleiro, the workshop regularly hosts temporary exhibitions by local, national, and international artists, ensuring a diverse and always current program.
Alongside the exhibitions, the venue promotes various educational and cultural initiatives. Through pedagogical programs, workshops, and visits, the aim is to encourage interaction between the public and artistic expressions, establishing the Manuel Cargaleiro Arts Workshop as a meeting and learning point in Seixal's cultural landscape.
