The Baixa da Banheira Museum Centre is situated in the heart of this locality, integrated within the municipality of Moita, in the district of Setúbal. Its location, amidst the urban daily life of Baixa da Banheira, invites a deeper discovery of the community's identity and roots, reflecting its history and people within the very environment it inhabits.
Inaugurated in 2008, this museum centre was born from a profound desire to preserve and share the collective memory of Baixa da Banheira. The project, driven by the community's efforts and, in particular, by the dynamic role of José João da Silva, has solidified as a space where objects donated by the inhabitants themselves transform into narratives about the region's life and past. It is a place that celebrates the tradition of keeping and exhibiting the "old things" that shaped the village's daily life, making them accessible to all.
Inside the Museum Centre, visitors will find a diverse collection of artefacts that depict the professions and crafts once common in Baixa da Banheira. From the instruments used by the barber or seamstress, to the tools of the cork worker or locksmith, each piece is a testament to the evolution of work and ways of life throughout the past century. The exhibition offers a journey through time, allowing for a tangible understanding of the experiences and daily labour of previous generations in the locality.
Since 2014, the Museum Centre has occupied a larger space, which has enabled an even richer organisation and presentation of its collection. This place is seen as a living organism, which is continuously built and evolved, fuelled by the contributions of the population. Its philosophy is based on seeking a balance between the past and the future, a concept symbolised by a scale. It is a dynamic project that is strengthened by community involvement and the constant sharing of new stories and life experiences, keeping alive the connection between generations.
