The fountain, initially called Chafariz do Sapal, was built in 1697, as indicated by an inscription on its back. Its construction was ordered by the Setúbal City Council.
The water was transported from a spring in Alferrara, about 3 km from the center of Setúbal, through the Aqueduto dos Arcos (Aqueduct of Arches), a water conduction system used at the time.
In the 20th century, the fountain was transferred to Praça Teófilo Braga, where it is currently located. Today, it has only a decorative value, without practical functions as in the past.
On the fountain, there is an engraved message that mentions the construction of the work:
"The Senate of the Chamber of this notable and ever loyal town of Setúbal ordered this work to be done in the era of 1697."
Since 1977, the Chafariz da Praça Teófilo Braga has been considered a Property of Public Interest, highlighting its historical and cultural importance.
It can be visited at Praça Teófilo Braga, in the parish of Nossa Senhora da Anunciada, in the municipality of Setúbal.
