Located in the municipality of Setúbal, more precisely in the parish of Nossa Senhora da Anunciada, the São Filipe Castle is situated within the Arrábida Natural Park. Its strategic position, on a high point, offers stunning views of the city, the Sado River estuary, and the Atlantic Ocean.
Built during the Philippine Dynasty (1580-1640), this fort began in 1582 under the supervision of the Italian architect Filippo Terzi. Its completion was overseen by Leonardo Torriani, around 1600. It was designed to reinforce the defense of the region against maritime attacks.
The fort features a star-shaped plan with six points, typical of military fortifications of the time. It includes imposing walls, a tunnel with a covered staircase, and various support structures, such as the former governor's residence and a low battery from the 17th century facing the sea.
Inside the fort is the chapel dedicated to São Filipe, with a rich covering of blue and white tiles, dating from 1736, which depict episodes from the life of the saint. This small chapel is one of the artistic highlights of the site.
Over the centuries, the castle has had various uses, from military defense to a 'pousada' (historic hotel). Currently, part of the fortification is open to the public, with areas such as the bar and the terrace available for visitation. However, some areas remain off-limits due to safety concerns.
The fort is accessible by a winding road that crosses the Arrábida Natural Park, providing a pleasant experience for those who appreciate natural and historical landscapes.
Classified as a National Monument since 1933, the São Filipe Castle is a point of interest that combines history, architecture, and panoramic views, making it an unmissable spot for visitors to Setúbal.
