The Municipal Museum is located in the center of Santiago do Cacém, in Praça do Município (Municipal Square). It is situated opposite the Municipal Council building, flanked by a public garden, in a central and easily accessible area of the town.
The museum occupies a building notable for its architecture, dating back to the 19th century. Initially built to serve as the District Prison, it was designed by Chiapa Monteiro. This imposing building functioned as a prison until 1968. After recovery and adaptation works, it opened its doors as the Municipal Museum in 1972, giving new life to this historic space.
The museum houses a diverse collection, with emphasis on the collections that help tell the history of the region. An important part of the initial collection was gathered by Dr. João da Cruz e Silva, a local figure who, over decades, collected valuable archaeological and numismatic pieces and donated them to the municipality.
The museum features a numismatic collection showcasing coin minting from the 3rd century BC until the beginning of the Republic, offering insight into local and national history. The museum also boasts a vast ethnographic display, enriched over time with contributions from the region's inhabitants. In addition to these, the collection includes pieces of decorative arts, ceramics, paintings, furniture, sculptures, textiles, as well as historical documentation and photographs.
