The Lousal Mining Museum is located in the village of Lousal, Grândola municipality, specifically in the Bairro dos Quartéis (Barracks Quarter). It is housed in the building that, in the past, was the mine's Power Plant, giving it a strong connection to its industrial past.
Its location in the heart of the old mining village allows visitors to feel the atmosphere that once characterized this center of activity, in an area of Alentejo marked by its history of mining exploration.
Inaugurated in 2001, this museum plays a crucial role in preserving the memory and legacy of the Lousal Mine, which operated between 1900 and 1988, focusing its exploration on pyrite. The museum space is dedicated to industrial archaeology, revealing the importance of this activity for the region and for the generations of workers who built their lives here.
The museum's creation resulted from an effort to revitalize the area, with the aim of valuing the mining heritage and offering a glimpse into the daily life during the exploration's most prosperous years.
The Lousal Mining Museum houses a significant collection of documents, objects, and equipment that transport visitors into the universe of the mine. It is possible to observe the old installations of the Compressor Plant and the Generator Plant, where the engines that once ensured power supply to the entire mining complex stand out.
The exhibited collections include manual work tools, lighting equipment used in underground galleries, and the reconstitution of a mine foreman's office. There is also an exhibition of 19th-century mine models, which illustrate various technical solutions for exploration and engineering.
With a recent refurbishment, the museum now offers a more dynamic and interactive visit experience. Through advanced technological solutions, such as interactive screens with 3D modeling, visitors can explore the mine's equipment and processes, accessing detailed information about their operation and historical context.
The tour includes new areas such as the "Mine Bottom," the "Geological Services," and the "Chemical Laboratory," as well as a space dedicated to the "Mining Community." A virtual reality system allows for immersion in the underground galleries and the simulation of tool usage. A robot, inspired by the pyrite formula (FeS2), accompanies the exhibition tour, enriching the interaction with the multimedia content.
